5 Crystal Lake, Cary Elementary Schools Ranked Among the Best in the Suburbs

Five elementary schools and four high schools earned top spots in Chicago magazine's 2016 rankings.

Several Crystal Lake and Cary schools were named to Chicago magazine's list of the best schools in McHenry County, which was released this week. In total, five out of the 10 elementary schools on Chicago magazine’s list were in Crystal Lake or Cary and an impressive four out of five local high schools made the list.

Here is a look at how local elementary schools ranked:

  • Indian Prairie Elementary School in Crystal Lake (No. 2)
  • Woods Creek Elementary School in Crystal Lake (No. 4)
  • South Elementary School in Crystal Lake (No. 8)
  • West Elementary School in Crystal Lake (No. 9)
  • Briargate School in Cary (No. 10)

  • Cary-Grove High School (No. 2)
  • Prairie Ridge High School (No. 3)
  • Crystal Lake Central High School (No. 4)
  • Crystal Lake South High School (No. 5)

In McHenry County, Edgebrook Elementary School in McHenry earned the No. 1 ranking among elementaries, and Woodstock High School took the top spot in its category.

Teaming up with nonprofit group RTI International,Chicago magazine created the criteria for its best of lists—divided by county and school level—based on test scores, attendance, spending per student, graduation rates (for the high schools) and other data taken from the Illinois Board of Education. The publication hasn't done this type of school analysis and ranking since 2012.
