St. Charles Retailer Showcases Paintings By Japanese-American Internment Camp Survivor

A St. Charles retailer is offering three original works by late Japanese-American artist Carl Hayano, who survived internment during World War II.

The paintings, “Holy Mackerel,” “Maguro” and “Sweet and Sour Pork,” are being displayed at Industrial Treasures, 1501 Indiana Ave., St. Charles, according to the Kane County Chronicle. Hayano was held at the Poston Relocation Center in Arizona from 1942 to 1944 before later becoming a longtime art professor and graduate director at Northern Illinois University.

The works, created in the 1970s, are being highlighted as a rare discovery by the store’s owner, according to the Kane County Chronicle.
