State's Attorney's Office Creates Support Group for Survivors of Crimes

The McHenry County State's Attorney's Office announced the new group on Tuesday.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL - The McHenry County State's Attorney's Office announced Tuesday the formation of a support group for those who have lost a loved one to a crime.

“Survivors of crime victims can never be fully recompensed for the cruel and senseless loss they have endured and many continue to struggle long after criminal proceedings have ended,” said McHenry County State's Attorney Patrick D. Kenneally. "We hope they can find some solace in sharing their experience with others and helping shoulder the burden together.”

The group will be facilitated by Jen Ahrens, a retired police officer with 30 years of experience in the field, according to a news release. Jen has worked with and helped hundreds of victims and their families throughout her career. She is also set to obtain her Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling this March.

The support group will be an opportunity to meet with other survivors who are experiencing similar trauma. The focus will be on the personal journey with grief in a safe and supportive environment.

The support group is free and open to anyone. It will meet the first and third Thursday of every month, starting April 6. The meetings will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Mental Health Board, 620 Dakota St., Crystal Lake. For more information contact the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office at (815) 334-4159.
