For years, the folks at Strelcheck Chiropractic in Crystal Lake have been helping area residents deal with stresses during the holidays, and every other time throughout the year.

The family-run business has been in Crystal Lake for 54 years, and at their spot at 10 N. Virginia for 44 years.

Dr. Dan Strelcheck first opened the business at Route 14 and Pingree Road. The business took off so well, that he built the current 6,400-square-foot clinic they now occupy just 10 years later.

Now the next generation, which includes Dr. Daniel Strelcheck, Jr. and a staff of 28 run the business.

While the practice is very busy all year around, the staff said they do see an increase in clients around the holidays.

Daniel Strelcheck Jr. attributes that increase to many different things. For example, he said, since it is the last quarter of the year, people are reaching their deductibles and out of pocket expenses, and so they come in more often.

However, he said, the changes in seasons, and the physical, emotional and environmental stress that puts onto the body is another reason for the increase in clients near the holidays.

That has proven the same year after year in the business, they said.

“We can certainly help with stress in many ways,” he said. “Stress causes what we call a subluxation to your body.  This is a bone misalignment that puts pressure on the nerve and decreases the joints’ ability to move.  The most obvious stress is physical stress and it takes a lot less than a severe car accident to cause a bone misalignment.

“The biomechanics of raking leaves, shoveling snow and simple daily living activities pulls bones out of place. Then you have stress from chemicals, whether they are manufactured or natural, whether you are genetically sensitive or not, will affect the organs, nervous system and muscles causing bone misalignments also.  Last but not least, you have emotional stress and that is certainly something we can all relate to whether it is from your job, home, or the holidays.  This stress causes your muscles to tense and tighten again pulling the bones out of place,” he said.

He said while the holidays are called the most wonderful time of the year, the holiday season can bring troubles too.

“The holiday season can bring an avalanche of emotional reminders and stress like no other season,” he said. “And when life changing events occur during the holidays, the impact can be devastating.  With relationships and family at the very heart of holiday stress, it’s not uncommon for me to see more patients throughout November, December and January.”

He offers many ideas for preventing stress from hurting your health, including acknowledging your feelings, being realistic, setting differences aside, exercise, learning to say no and taking time for yourself.

And if all else fails, you can try to fit in a massage, which Strelcheck also offers in additional to their regular chiropractic services, he said.
