Steckel, a 2004 graduate of Crystal Lake South High School, was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on July 2,  2010. Steckel, only 24 when he died, was a star running back of South's football team and well-respected role model.

He earned a scholarship to play football at Eastern Illinois University. After graduating with a degree in sociology, he became a certified firefighter/EMT as an apprentice with the Woodstock Fire Rescue District. He was on his way to becoming a paramedic when his life suddenly ended too early, according to the Trent Steckel Scholarship website.

Funds raised from Friday's golf event will assist aspiring firefighters, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, nurses and related professions, Murphy said.
