Trojans' Take Home Senior Night Victory

On a night where Cary-Grove honored their five senior boys basketball players along with senior volleyball players Kelly Lamberti and Colleen Smith, it was one senior who stole the show.

Alex Posey scored a career-high 17 points as the Trojans got back to the .500 mark in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division, holding on for a 54-47 win over McHenry at Elroy Fitzgerald Gymnasium.

Cary (10-13, 4-4) was able to jump out to an early lead on the strength of a 10-4 run that lasted from the first quarter into the second that gave C-G a 10-8 lead. Cary would extend the lead to six by halftime at 23-17 and grew the lead to nine by the early part of the third quarter.

The Warriors would go on a 6-1 run to pull within 36-31 before Cary responded with a 13-2 run to take a 49-33 lead in the fourth quarter. McHenry would not go quietly and finished the game on a 14-5 run where McHenry had chances to get the game back to an one-possession game but could not.

Cary coach Ralph Schuetzle was very pleased with Posey’s career night especially with McHenry not having their two best inside options, Brian Madson and Jimmy Preston, who were out due to illness.

“We’re excited for him,” Schuetzle said. “17 points, that’s what he needs to do with his size and them not having their two bigger guys. He was able to establish himself in there and plus flash to high post and knock a couple jumpers down.”

Posey said that he was starting to get the stroke coming out of the half.

“I was feeling good, I was shooting well in the warm-ups and once I hit a couple in the beginning of the half, I was on fire,” Posey said.

Nick Richter added 15 for C-G and said that the way the offense was running gave Posey more opportunities.

“Alex stepped up big tonight,” Richter said. “He is capable of doing that every night. We just finally got spread and he was open a lot more and hitting his shots. That is huge for us especially getting some more points on the board.”

Cary will finish the season with three straight games on the road beginning with Tuesday night’s visit to Algonquin to face Jacobs at 7 p.m.
