Volo Chemical Spill Poses ‘No Threat’ to Community: Authorities

About 200 gallons of liquid fertilizer spilled from a truck, authorities said.

VOLO, IL — HazMat teams responded to Volo Saturday after 200 gallons of liquid fertilizer seeped out from a truck and into a storm drain, authorities said. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the intersection of North Cornerstone Drive and Remington Drive at 10:10 a.m. where they found a TruGreen Fertilizer Truck, which had leaked about 200 gallons of the chemicals. The Fox Lake Fire and HazMat Teams responded to the scene and determined the fertilizer, which leaked into the storm drain, didn’t pose an immediate hazard to the surrounding community, according to a new release.

HazMat crews dammed the storm drains in an effort to prevent the fertilizer from flowing further into the drains, police said.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Lake County Health Department, and the village of Volo were made aware of the situation. An environmental group is responding to the scene for cleanup and decontamination, police said Saturday afternoon.

The cause of the leak appears to be from a faulty container holding the fertilizer, according to authorities.
