West Elementary Students Honor Veterans with Reenactment of "The Wall"

The packed room was filled with a sea of red, white and blue as Kindergarten through fifth-grade students and staff members donned patriotic colors and West boy scouts and girl scouts proudly wore their uniforms. Each year West students play an active role in the special day by singing songs, reading poetry and enacting a touching story about veterans. This year, student council members reenacted “The Wall” by Eve Bunting, which poignantly describes a day at the Vietnam Wall in Washington D.C. In addition, this year West invited veterans Sean Gore, Ron Slavenas and George Haupt to attend the assembly and speak to students about their military experience.

In accordance with tradition, students exited the assembly with their teachers in total silence to reflect upon the presentation, as well as the service and dedication of the nation’s heroes. Through their active involvement and engaging presentation, students obtained a true understanding of the meaning of Veteran’s Day.
