Winter Storm Could Wreak Havoc on Tuesday Commute

A winter storm is expected to hit northern Illinois.

A winter storm is expected to hit northern Illinois Tuesday.

The heaviest snowfall will be for the far northern Illinois counties. Heavy, wet snow accumulations of one to four inches is expected for Lake and McHenry counties while Kane, DuPage and Cook counties could see one to three inches, according to the National Weather Service. All of those counties are under a winter weather advisory through 9 a.m.

This morning, sleet, freezing rain and snow will turn to all snow. A light coating of ice is possible early Tuesday, which could make for slick roadways. Strong winds of up to 30 mph are also expected, which could cause significantly reduced visibility and dangerous travel conditions.

  • Waukegan: 7.0
  • Lake and McHenry: 4.0-6.0
  • Near North Cook: 3.0-4.0
  • O’Hare: 3.8
  • Midway: 3.1
  • DuPage: 2.8
  • DeKalb: 2.6
  • Romeoville: 1.7
