Woman Charged With DUI In Crash That Killed Man Who Came To Her Aid
The Good Samaritan from Crystal Lake was trying to help the woman who had rolled her car in South Barrington when he was struck by an SUV.

SOUTH BARRINGTON, IL - A 21-year-old Carpentersville woman has been charged with DUI for her role in a fatal crash during the early morning hours of July 4, according to the Daily Herald. Jenny Duran-Sosa, 21,was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer when it left the road in the area between Bartlett and and Penny roads in South Barrington at about 1:15 a.m. and rolled over.
A Good Samaritan from Crystal Lake got out of his car to help Duran-Sosa and was killed after being hit by a passing SUV. Delbert G. Gandy, 60, of Crystal Lake, was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the SUV, a 53-year-old St. Charles woman, was not injured in the crash and criminal charges have not yet been filed against her, the Daily Herald reports.

Meanwhile, Duran-Sosa was charged with driving under the influence on Thursday, according to the Northwest Herald. She was treated for injuries sustained in the crash at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge following the Fourth of July accident.

"Gordy died doing what he always tried to do, helping someone in need,” said head fencing coach Fernando Delgado. “He will be truly missed.”
Gandy was an assistant fencing coach at Stevenson between 2003 and 2016. He also has served as a coach for the Crimson Blades Fencing Academy in Libertyville, at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, and at the Bristol Renaissance Fair in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
A celebration of Gandy’s life will take place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 12 at American Legion Post 294, 212 Washington Street, in Morris, Illinois. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 Hoff Road, in Elwood, Illinois.
Gandy also served in the United States Marine Corps and was a former Joliet police officer.
