Working Smoke Detectors Credited With Alerting Cary Family to Fire

The fire broke out Friday night at a home in Cary.

Working smoke detectors are credited with saving the lives of a Cary family after a blaze broke out in their home Friday night.

The fire at 140 Adare Drive was reported at about 8:50 p.m. on Friday and an off-duty firefighter living in the neighborhood was the first on scene, according to a press release from the Cary Fire Department. The firefighter noticed smoke showing from the second floor and the homeowner was inside trying to extinguish it with a garden hose.

Firefighter Bill Gitzke Jr. was able to get the homeowner out of the house before the first fire truck arrived and firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in 10 minutes, according to a news release.

The homeowner and his wife were home watching TV in their basement when the fire broke out, according to fire officials. The husband and wife were alerted to the blaze when their smoke detectors started to go off and the husband went upstairs to investigate.

The husband found the fire in an upstairs bedroom. No one was injured in the blaze.

The fire was contained to the upstairs bedroom but the entire second floor had smoke damage, according to a news release.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but not considered suspicious.
