Halloween Week 2019: Library, Park Events; Trick or Treat

From trick or treating to hayrides to Halloween story times, the northwest suburbs has plenty of family-friendly events planned this week.

It’s Halloween week and there is plenty going on. Beyond trick-or-treating in neighborhoods throughout the northwest suburbs, local libraries, park districts and municipalities will be hosting fun and often free events catering to all ages and a variety of interests.

Below, we’ve included a day-by-day guide to those events, trunk or treats, library happenings, trick or treat hours and more in the northwest suburbs for the coming days.

Halloween Parades, Story Times, Family-Friendly Events

Sunday, Oct. 27

Sleepy Hollow: Halloween in the Hollow 2019, 3 to 7 p.m.— Bring your children down to show off their costumes, participate in pumpkin decorating and hop on the hayride. Everyone is welcome to participate in the chili contest and enjoy the bonfire. There will be an appearance from the Headless Horseman. More via the event website.

Woodstock: Witches and Wizards, 1 to 6 p.m. in Woodstock Square. The hit fantasy festival features the beloved Magical Hat, the Loyola University Quidditch Squad, fantasy-themed trivia contests, scavenger hunts, games, crafts, shopping, amazing food and beverages, and all manner of entertainment offered at no charge to attendees, whether magicians or muggles. The Woodstock Public Library, City of Woodstock, and the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce & Industry work with Square businesses and corporate sponsors to ensure visitors have a magical fall afternoon. Libertyville: Trick-or-Read Storywalk will be available all week during normal library hours at the Cook Park Library, 413 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Libertyville. Halloween stories will be displayed around the department for you and your little one to enjoy at your own pace.

Monday, Oct. 28

Fox Lake: Fox Lake Police Department Halloween Howl — The event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Fox Lake Police Department, 301 IL-59. The event is free and families will get to enjoy treats, hot dogs, bouncy houses, hot chocolate, hay rides, and candy apples. Halloween costumes are encouraged. More via Facebook.

Grayslake: Grayslake Story Time and Halloween Parade — 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the library, 100 Library Lane. This event is free and registration is required. More information via the Grayslake Public Library website. There will be an additional storytime and parade at 6 p.m. but that program is currently full.

East Dundee: The story time, parade and party will run from 6 to 7 p.m. at the library, 555 Barrington Avenue, East Dundee. Come in costume for stories, a parade, and slightly spooky fun for the whole family. More via the library’s website.

Barrington: Costume Party Story Time and Parade, 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the Barrington Library, 505 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington. More via the library’s website.

Palatine: Baby Halloween Storytime — 6:30 to 7 p.m. at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. Court St. Dress your baby in a costume and come enjoy this seasonal lap sit story time. Birth through 12 months with parent/caregiver. This is a drop in program. More via the library’s website.

Wauconda: Sugar Skull Decoration, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Waucounda Area Public Library, 801 N. Main St. The event is meant to recognize Dia de Muertos, which is celebrated throughout Latin America.

Wednesday, Oct. 30

Mount Prospect: Trick or Treat Tales will start at 10:30 a.m. at the Mount Prospect Library, 10 S. Emerson Street in Mount Prospect. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume, listen to a spooky story, grab a treat, and then take part in a parade inside the library. Registration is required. More via the library’s website.

McHenry: A Halloween Bash will be held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the McHenry Public Library, 809 Front Street, McHenry. Registration is required. More via the McHenry Public Library website.

Elgin: Halloween Happening at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Wear your costume and there will be a parade through the library. No registration is required.

Thursday, Oct. 31

Schaumburg: Halloween Hoopla, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Schaumburg Central Library, 130 South Roselle Road. More via the library’s website.

Palatine: Halloween Storytime and Parade at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. Court Ave. There will be two times for these drop-in events: 10 to 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 to 7 p.m. More via the library’s website.

Wauconda: Preschool Halloween Party at the Wauconda Area Public Library. There will be parties from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and another session from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Come in costume and get ready to sing and dance with musician Mary Macaroni in this interactive concert for children. There will be a parade and a take-home surprise. To register, visit the Wauconda Library website.

Trick or Treat, Trunk or Treat Hours

Sunday, Oct. 27

  • Hainesville: Neighborhood trick or treating will be from 4 to 7 p.m. The village will also be offering free Halloween hayrides in specified locations in town. Some of those hayrides will be open from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and others will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. More via the village of Hainesville website.
  • Wauconda: From 1 to 5 p.m., stop in the shops and restaurants on main street for treats, games, and specials and there will also be a pet costume parade, pumpkin carving contest and spooky tales. At Beach Park, there will be a kid-friendly haunted house, carnival games, and bounce houses. All events are free and a shuttle will also be available. More via the Wauconda Chamber of Commerce.
  • Waukegan: 2 to 5 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating.
  • Port Barrington: 1 to 4 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating.

Tuesday, Oct. 29


Mount Prospect: The Downtown Mount Prospect trick or treat event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Participating businesses will have an orange pumpkin on their door or window. Businesses with teal pumpkins will offer non-food treats. Downtown trick-or-treat maps are available on the first level of Village Hall.

Wednesday, Oct. 30

Hoffman Estates: Trick or treat climb at The Club at Prairie Stone, 5050 Sedge Boulevard in Hoffman Estates, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. 5 to 13 years old climb from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and 7 to13 year olds climb from 7 to 8 p.m. Cost is $12 to $15 and registration is required. Thursday, Oct. 31

  • Woodstock: 4 to 7 p.m. for neighborhood trick-or-treating. Halloween festivities on the square will start at 4 p.m. with trick or treating. The Halloween costume contest will get underway at 4:45 p.m. More via the city’s website
  • Crystal Lake: Downtown businesses will hand out candy from 3 to 5 p.m. Neighborhood trick or treating is from 3 to 7 p.m.
  • Cary: Neighborhood trick or treating will be from 3 to 7 p.m.
  • Algonquin: 3 to 7 p.m. for neighborhood trick-or-treating.
  • Lake in the Hills: Neighborhood trick or treating is from 2 to 8 p.m. Trick-or-treat throughout Safety Town — the miniature town located behind the Safety Education Center, located at 1109 Crystal Lake Road — from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Huntley: Trick or treat around the square from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Neighborhood trick or treating is from 4 to 8 p.m.
  • Barrington: A trunk or treat for the whole community will be held in the St. Michael's parking lot, 647 Dundee Avenue, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Barrington: 3 to 7 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating
  • Lake Zurich: 3 to 8 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating.
  • Carpentersville: 3 to 7 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating
  • Lake Barrington: 3 to 7 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating
  • Hoffman Estates: 3 to 7 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating
  • Schaumburg: 3 to 7 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating
  • Schaumburg: Trick or treating at Spring Valley Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. More via the Schauburg Park District website.
  • Buffalo Grove: 3 to 8 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating. From 3 to 5 p.m. is meant younger children to enjoy neighborhood trick or treating.
  • Wheeling: 3 to 7 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating.
  • Arlington Heights: 3 to 7 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating. Downtown trick or treat will run from 3 to 6 p.m.
  • Palatine: 3 to 7 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating.
  • Hawthorn Woods: 4 to 8 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating.
  • Park Ridge: 3 to 8 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating.
  • Rolling Meadows: 3 to 8 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating.
  • Mount Prospect: 3 to 8 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating.
  • Vernon Hills: 4 to 8 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating.
  • Libertyville: 4 to 8 p.m. for neighborhood trick or treating.
