Off-Campus Lunch Pushed Again At Hinsdale South

DARIEN, IL – A student leader at Hinsdale South High School is again pushing the school board to allow students off campus for lunch.

Madeline LaPointe, South's student liaison to the Hinsdale High School District 86 board, brought attention to the issue in her written report for Thursday's board meeting.

She said students were confused by the lack of off-campus lunch for seniors. That confusion, she said, is because the school is in a prime position to offer such a benefit given it is near restaurants.

"South seniors want to work for this, but many feel as though no matter their input, off-campus lunch is not something that they will be able to participate in," LaPointe said in her report.

LaPointe called for a board vote on the issue.

She first brought up the issue in her report in early September.

During a board meeting, board President Catherine Greenspon asked LaPointe whether she favored a minimum grade requirement for those eligible to go off campus.

LaPointe said she was for both grade and behavioral thresholds.

At the meeting, South Principal Patrick Hardy said he favored off-campus lunch for grade-eligible seniors. He explained his position, which Patch wrote about in a story at the time.
