DARIEN, IL – Darien police officers saved a number of people's lives in 2022. The police department detailed the cases in its recent annual report:

  • Late morning July 4, 2022, Officer Nicholas Nelson responded to a 50-year-old man who was a drowning victim. The man, who was lying on the ground next to a pool, was unconscious and not breathing. The man's face was blue. Nelson did chest compressions and asked a nurse who was present to open and prepare his automated external defibrillator, or AED. The man began breathing while Nelson was applying chest compressions. The coloring in the man's face returned to normal. He was taken to the hospital.
  • Late the night of July 15, 2022, Officer Paulina Noga was called to a local hotel about a man lying on the ground in the parking lot. He was unconscious and not breathing. The officer applied a sternum rub for a few seconds with no change in the man's condition. She then administered a dose of Narcan, which is used to treat overdoses, and continued the sternum rub. After the third dose of Narcan, the man moved, with his breathing shallow. His eyes remained closed. He was taken to the hospital.
  • During the evening of Oct. 6, 2022, Auxiliary Officer Keith Bucholz was patrolling in the 3400 block of Drover Lane when he saw a car parked at the end of a driveway near a row of trees. The driver, a 31-year-old man, was unconscious and bleeding from his forearms. The man was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Hospital staff later said they repaired the man's injuries during surgery and that it appeared he would make a full recovery. Because of Bucholz's work, the man's life was saved, police said.
  • During the evening of April 15, 2022, Officer Nicholas Nelson was called about a heroin overdose victim, a 23-year-old man. The man was lying on the floor in a bedroom. Nelson gave the man two doses of Narcan and performed CPR. Shortly after paramedics arrived, the man started breathing again and opened his eyes. The man made a full recovery.
  • In the early evening of March 11, 2022, officers Nelson Servin and David Milazzo responded to a drug overdose victim who was unconscious and not breathing.
