DARIEN, IL – Based on complaints, Darien is considering limiting rentals such as Airbnbs in residential neighborhoods.

In May, the City Council sent a proposal to ban short-term rentals of less than 30 days to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The commission, however, recommended earlier this month that rentals of less than a year be prohibited. The City Council is expected to address the issue at its meeting Monday.

According to city documents, the commission said the longer ban would better address issues of the "high intensity of transient guests who don't have a strong connection with the neighborhood or community as a whole."

The ban would also uphold the "value and integrity" of residential neighborhoods throughout Darien, the city said.

In its documents, the city said that because a year-long minimal rental period is so much greater than a month, it would be required to hold a new public hearing before the City Council voted on it.

In an email to Patch on Friday, Alderman Eric Gustafson said, "We will do it for a ban not less than 30 days. Not the one year that the committee recommended."
