Darien May Get Pool Hall, Bar, Video Games

It won't be a "darky and smoky place," but rather a clean, well-lit business, the owner said.

DARIEN, IL – Darien is looking at a proposal for a business that would feature a pool hall, video games, a bar and a kitchen.

The business would be in the space previously occupied by XSport Fitness in the Chestnut Court shopping center, southeast of 75th Street and Lemont Road.

According to the plan, the business would include 32 pool tables, six video game machines, a "high-end" darts area and a mezzanine level with space for private parties and corporate events.

The business plans to seek a liquor license.

The owner, Darick Ammons, said the business's new concept would revolutionize the world of playing pool.

"The mental image that often comes to mind (of a pool hall) is a dark and smoky place," Ammons said in a letter to Darien officials. "They have typically not been seen as a place to bring a date or (have) a fun night out."

He continued, "We are building a place that is embracing greater technology in ways that will enhance the classic experience without taking away the authenticity of the game. We're providing a modern, well-lit place with high ceilings and clean lines that is both inviting and trendy."

A camera on every table will make games viewable for livestreaming, he said.

Ammons said his business will have plenty of pool tables.

"Current venues have either very few pool tables or they are cramped and poorly set up with no place to sit or any reason to bring friends or even your spouse," he said. "Low ceilings and music played way too loud take away from the games and the atmosphere – yet the leagues keep growing and there is no space to accommodate them."

The city's zoning board plans to review the proposal at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the City Council's chambers at City Hall.

A couple of years ago, developer Kumar Bhavanasi bought Chestnut Court, with plans to renovate much of the largely vacant shopping center.
