Darien's Deadline For Trash Service Nears

Garbage pickup is required of all homeowners under a Darien ordinance.

DARIEN, IL — Darien residents have until Friday to register for their choice of service with the city's new garbage provider, Morton Grove-based LRS.

On Sunday, the city emailed a statement to residents about the garbage service. It said trash service is mandatory for all homes in accordance with city ordinance and health and safety guidelines. The contract for LRS begins April 1.

For years, Houston-based Waste Management has been the city's private garbage provider. But in November, the City Council chose LRS, saying the deal was better for the overwhelming majority of residents.

The city's statement said all single-family and townhome property owners were required to register with LRS by Friday. According to the statement, cart size options are available. Homeowners who do not register for service will automatically be delivered a 95-gallon garbage cart and a 95-gallon recycling cart, the city said.

Some Darien residents were unhappy that the new contract includes no sticker option, typically the choice of low-volume customers. But all three bidders for the contract would have included sharply higher prices for stickers than the current fee.

City officials said they liked the offer by LRS, which meant unlimited pickup of garbage, yard waste and recycling. Under the contract, residents also can dispose one bulk item per week and take part in a food composing program.

Residents can register for service with LRS on the company's website.
