The Heat is On: Cooling Centers Open in DuPage County

Oppressive heat and humidity has hit the Chicago area for the start of this work week.
Temperatures should reach a high of 90 to 94 degrees in the Chicago area today. Heat index values will be between 100 and 110, according to the National Weather Service.

A cold front from the west could spawn scattered thunderstorms across the area Monday -- mainly in communities north of I-80.
For those looking to stay out of the heat, there are a variety of cooling sites located throughout DuPage County at local libraries, park districts and community centers. A list of cooling sites can be found on the county website athttp://www.dupageco.org/ProtectDuPage/. Residents should call centers first to make sure they are open.

Residents are also encouraged to:
· Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Exercise during cooler times of day.
· Check on the elderly, family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning or who spend much of their time alone.
· Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
· Ensure that pets have enough water and shade.
