DARIEN, IL – Hinsdale South High School's student body this year honored two kings during its homecoming festivities this year. No one was designated a queen.

Now, the top two vote-getters — whether male or female — are named as royalty. The winners get to select whether they want to be referred to as a king, queen or royalty, according to the school.

For homecoming last week, two boys held the distinction of being kings.

The plans for homecoming are developed annually by a student committee and faculty sponsors, said Chris Jasculca, spokesman for Hinsdale High School District 86.

"The committee is open to any student who wishes to help with the planning for that year," Jasculca said in an email.

Weeks before homecoming, freshmen, sophomores and juniors voted for two students from each of their classes to be a part of the homecoming court. Seniors selected 10 students from their class.

During an all-school assembly, the entire student body voted on two members of the senior court to serve as royalty.

The 16 members of the court reviewed the voting process before the assembly and had no questions or concerns, Jasculca said.

Other area schools, including Riverside-Brookfield High School, are following a similar procedure. The South committee believes the process gives all students the chance to be involved, Jasculca said.
