DARIEN, IL – A Hinsdale High School District 86 board member suggested Thursday the administration was manipulating information.

At a board meeting, member Jeff Waters responded to recent complaints that Hinsdale South High only has one advanced placement chemistry course next year, rather than two. That means three students recommended for the course won't be able to take it.

Waters said he did not necessarily trust the administration's directives to counselors "when it tends to play out that students are being steered away from particular courses."

"I do believe the persistence of low enrollment is perhaps being manipulated by the administration's demands of staff," Waters said.

He acknowledged some may see his comments as harsh, but he considers them honest.

Waters urged the board to discuss finding the resources to offer a second AP Chemistry class at South.

Acting Superintendent Chris Covino asked for the board to hold off on a discussion. He said he would meet soon with parents about the issue.

Board members agreed to a delay.

The administration is led by Superintendent Tammy Prentiss, whom the board placed on a "leave of absence" last month.
