DARIEN, IL – A major gas station project is expected to start in the coming months, a city official said this week.

At a City Council meeting, Darien official Dan Gombac was asked about the Shell gas station at Cass Avenue and North Frontage Road.

Gombac said the station's owner, True North Energy, would likely break ground on a revamped building this year.

As part of the work, True North wants to remove the drive-thru car wash and make way for an "architecturally enhanced mini-mart."

At a committee meeting earlier this year, Gombac said the architectural design would improve the site's ambiance.

True North, which recently bought the station, considered the structure aged and past its useful life.

In April, the council approved a beer and wine license for the gas station.

Four other Darien gas stations hold beer and wine licenses – the Circle K at North Frontage and Lemont roads and the Speedways at 83rd Street and Lemont Road, 75th Street and Cass Avenue, and 103rd Street and Lemont.
