Cub Scout Rain Gutter Regatta Sets Sail

The Cub Scout Pack 50 Raingutter Regatta set sail on Friday night with 26 scout 'captains' guiding their boats along the course.

The Scouts built their own boats from kits, adding paint and other decorations themselves. Each boat had a unique design, including boats decorated with sea monsters, Cub Scout popcorn, and of course pirate ships. Awards were given for craftsmanship, creativity, painting, and scout/patriotic themes.

Scouts raced their boats two at a time down 10-foot rain gutters. All propulsion was provided by the scouts - by blowing on the sails. Trophies were awarded to the top three racers in each scout den.

The event is an annual tradition at Pack 50. While not as well-known as the Pinewood Derby, many scouts prefer the Raingutter Regatta because they provide the power to move the boat.

Cub Scout Pack 50 includes boys from Wilmot, South Park, and Bannockburn schools. More information can be found at www.pack50deerfield.scoutlander.com.
