Chestnut Street Townhouse Project Moves to Village Board

First reading of ordinance allowing the nine-townhouse development to be constructed across from train station will be June 1.

The Deerfield Village Board voted to accept a report from the Plan Commission recommending approval for a project by Deerfield-based Jacobs Companies to build nine townhomes across Chestnut Street from the downtown Deerfield train station this week, but some still have their concerns.

The first reading of an ordinance approving the project could come June 1, with final approval as soon as June 15, the Deerfield Review reports.

Although Trustee Barbara Struthers voted in favor moving the recommendation on to first reading, she said a rain garden maintained by the homeowners association is a must if the project is to move forward.

“We don’t want mosquitoes breeding where hundreds of people will be getting on the train,” she said. “It’s my understanding a rain garden will prevent that.”

Nearby homeowner Alex Epstein also told trustees he’d like to see screening around the new homes’ air conditioning units to block them from his view and to muffle noise.

If the project is approved and constructed, plans are for townhomes to sell at a price in the range of $599,000 to $699,000. Two- and three- bedroom models will range from 2,201 to 2,585 square feet.
