Deerfield Obituary: Emmi Benthaus, nee Treu, 88

Emmi and her husband were longtime residents of Deerfield, where they raised their three children.

Emmi Benthaus, nee Treu, age 88, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2015 in the presence of loved ones. Emmi was born in Munich, Germany where she met her husband, Adolf, who served as an interpreter in the U.S. Army in WWII. Emmi and her husband were longtime residents of Deerfield, where they raised their three children. Emmi will be remembered for her loving devotion to her family, her delight in life’s small pleasures, her persistent optimism, her hospitality and her cooking and bakingskills. Even as Emmi struggled with Alzheimer’s disease during her final years, she was known for her contagious smile to the caregivers at Addolorata Villa. Emmi was the devoted mother of Linda Seward and Julie Benthaus, beloved sister of Albert Treu, cherished Oma of Jennifer Benthaus, Michael Benthaus, Julie (Paul) Schatz, and Emmi Benthaus Banner and great-grandmother of Sonja Schatz. Emmi was predeceased by her husband, Adolf, and son, Richard. A memorial service in remembrance of Emmi will be held at a future date at Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home in Highland Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Emmi Benthaus may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at http://www.alz.org.
