DEERFIELD, IL - Every day, 29 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. This is one death every 50 minutes.

Drugs other than alcohol, legal and illegal, are also involved in about 16% of motor vehicle crashes, the CDC reports.

To help keep drivers safe during the holiday season, the Deerfield Police Department began conducting additional traffic safety and sobriety patrols on Dec. 17 and will continue doing so through Jan. 2. It's all part of a national law enforcement campaign called "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over."

The primary reason of these extra patrols will be to arrest impaired drivers and heighten public awareness of the dangers of driving while under the influence of an intoxicating substance, police said.

"Stay safe this holiday season," the department posted via social media. "If your celebration involves festive drinks, make sure you designate a sober driver and remember: Drive sober or get pulled over."
