Deerfield Police Save Woman From Heroin Overdose

Christmas Day use of naloxone, which reverses effects of heroin, was first use of drug in Lake County.

The Deerfield Police Department used naloxone, a substance that reverses the effects of heroin, to prevent a woman from overdosing on Christmas Day, the Chicago Tribune reports. The life-saving effort marked the first time the substance had been used by police in Lake County.

The Tribune story states that four responding officers gave a 29-year-old woman a shot of the drug before administering CPR and then gave her a second shot. The woman was transported to NorthShore Highland Park Hospital where she made a full recovery.

“Law enforcement authorities in only three counties in Illinois — Lake, McHenry and DuPage — carry naloxone,” the article states.
