A large crowd of Deerfield residents spent a sunny May 26 Memorial Day morning honoring our past war dead in somber ceremonies organized by American Legion Post 738 at the Veterans Memorial in Jewell Park.
There was early morning music by the Community Swing Band, along with a 5K run organized for Veterans and others by Essence Pilates. Then, at 10 a.m. ceremonies were held at the Veterans Memorial by the American Legion Post 738.
Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal cited the serious commitment that those in the military assume on our behalf in keeping our country safe and free.
Legion Post Commander John Coughenour, a Viet Nam Army veteran, and Women's Auxiliary President Joann Harrison, paid homage to the fallen in past wars and charged citizens with never forgetting the sacrifices they made for our country.
Sons of the American Legion served as color guard bearers while Cub Scouts presented the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Deerfield High School Marching Band led a parade of Boy and Girl Scouts from Village Hall south on Waukegan Road to the Deerfield Cemetery where a rifle salute and echo taps was given as Coughenhour read a list of the military that was buried there since the Civil War.
