Deerfield Senior Wins State Junior Golf Title

DHS's Elyse Emerzian was crowned Illinois Junior Girls' Amateur Champion with a win at University of Illinois' home course.

DEERFIELD, IL — Deerfield High School senior Elyse Emerzian won Illinois State Junior Girls' Championship at the University of Illinois Orange Course by a single stroke in downstate Savoy last week. Her two-day total of 144 edged New Trier's Penelope Tir and Lincoln-Way Central's Grace Curran to earn the title of champion.

Emerzian has not yet decided where she'll go to college, but she expects golf to be a part of her experience. She told the Deerfield Review she's been working on the mental aspect of her game and hopes her recent junior state title will offer good preparation toward fighting for the IHSA championship this fall. And DHS golf coach Tim Bleck said he believes Emerzian can compete at the top collegiate level. Bleck said he's already received a call from one coach.

"After what she did on the University of Illinois' home course, she got the attention of a lot of coaches," Bleck told the paper.
