DEERFIELD, IL — Deerfield Public Schools District 109 will be shifting to an AM/PM hybrid schedule for middle school students starting in late October. The Board of Education voted Tuesday to transition to this hybrid schedule and, like our elementary schools, replace the 109 Online model used to start the school year. This means that all K-8 students that elect to will be in-person half-day by the end of October.

Students will take two core classes in-person at school four days a week, according to a press release from the district, and spend the other portion of their day taking their other two core classes and all encore classes virtually. Wednesdays will be virtual learning for all students. 6th graders who opt to begin half-day in-person instruction will do so on Oct. 26, with 7th and 8th graders beginning in-person instruction on Oct. 29. A copy of the approved schedule and the results of last week’s middle school parent survey that was presented at the Board of Education meeting can be found here.

Virtual learning will always be an option for any 109 family who opts for it during the 2020-2021 school year, according to the release, with no need to provide a reason. District 109 families will now have a choice as to whether they want their child on the hybrid in-person path or the hybrid virtual path. A commitment form will be sent to families in the coming days to allow them to make their decision. The district will also hold a virtual town hall (date TBD), like we did in the elementary school re-entry process, to answer any questions.
