As officers searched for the hit-and-run driver, the driver of the Porsche told dispatchers he followed the Equinox, catching up to it about a mile north where it had crashed, police said. Officers arrived to find a Chevy with matching plates had just struck the street sign at the corner of Waukegan Road and Chapel Court, knocking it over and onto a parked Honda. The Honda's owner, a 52-year-old Deerfield man, told police he saw Palmerin drive off the road and into the sign.

Palmerin appeared drunk, smelled of alcohol and was bleeding, so officers called a Deerfield Fire Department ambulance to check on him, according to police reports. He was taken to Highland Park Hospital for a few hours and placed under arrest on suspicion of drunk driving.
