Hit-And-Run Driver Held After Fatally Striking Woman: Police

Deerfield police said a pedestrian died after being found lying in a parking lot near the intersection of Waukegan and Deerfield roads.

DEERFIELD, IL — A hit-and-run driver is in custody after fatally striking a woman in Deerfield Friday, police said.

At 11:37 a.m., police got a call that a car had struck a pedestrian in the 800 block of Waukegan Road, which extends from the intersection of Waukegan and Deerfield roads to the department's headquarters.

Paramedics and police found an injured 53-year-old woman lying in a parking lot and began performing rescue efforts before taking her to Highland Park Hospital, Deerfield police said in a statement.

Police said the driver who struck her "was located away from the scene and taken into custody" pending charges. The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team and Deerfield police are continuing to investigate the incident and awaiting the results of toxicology testing.

The driver, a 68-year-old man, was cooperating with the investigation, according to police. No charges had been filed as of Friday afternoon.
