MLK Day 2018: What's Open, What's Closed In Deerfield

DEERFIELD, IL — Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be marked Monday across the country. It's the 32nd year a federal holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader has been observed.
While many in Chicagoland will still have have to work, most schools and government offices will take a break. Plus, many community events are being held to mark the occasion.
Here’s what you can expect to find open and closed in Deerfield on Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

- Schools: Schools will be closed.
- Deerfield Public Library: The library will remain open Jan. 15.
- Banks: Most bank branches will be closed.
- Government: Most government offices will be closed.
- U.S. Postal Service: Post offices will be closed and there will be no mail delivery.
- Garbage Pickup: Refuse collection will not be affected by the holiday.

“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness,” King said. On Monday, Deerfield will be marking its fourth year of "Give Where You Live – Deerfield.
The village invited the community to participate in a day of service from noon-2 p.m. Monday at Village Hall in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Volunteers will take part in a variety of service projects appropriate for all ages including making care packages for the homeless, collecting and sorting food and related items, making chemo care packages for cancer patients and writing letters and cards of encouragement.
Everyone can help by donating:
- Non-perishable food
- Toiletries & travel-size hygiene products
- Socks & warm clothing
- Water bottles
- Gift cards
- Lip balm
- Silk or fleece pillow cases
- Unscented wet wipes
- Hand sanitizer
- Caffeine-free tea
(Collection boxes can be found in the Village Hall lobby and the Deerfield Police lobby at 850 Waukegan Road. The collection box in the Police Department is accessible for donations at all hours.)

The synagogue B'Nai Jehoshua Beth Elohim is holding a day of service from noon to 3:30 p.m. at 1201 Lake Cook Road. It will include chances for social action on and off site. Additionally, planning and leadership opportunities are available.
"Make Martin Luther King's Day a day on instead of a day off. We provide various off and on-site social action opportunities to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition to participating, opportunities for planning and "day-of" leadership are available."
