Portillo's is Coming to Deerfield

Plan is for popular Chicagoland restaurant chain to take up freestanding space in Deerbrook Shopping Center.

Hot dog lovers in Deerfield may be spending a lot more time in the Deerbrook Shopping Center come November.

That’s because Portillo’s will be constructed at a freestanding location there, the Deerfield Review reports. The company is seeking a special use permit from the village and an amendment to Deerbrook’s planned unit development. With approval in May, construction on the popular Chicagoland hot dog chain could begin this summer.

It appeared Portillo’s was already on their way to Deerfield last year, but the company found a potential location on Lake Cook Rd. unsuitable in October.

Portillo’s Chief Operating Officer Sherri Abruscato credited Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal and other village officials for keeping in contact and not letting last year’s setback prevent a near future location in the village.

“The mayor stayed in touch and played an integral role,” Abruscato said. “The village was helpful to (company founder) Dick Portillo and we kept looking for an opportunity to give it a second chance.”

“I kept in touch with Dick Portillo and made some suggestions,” Rosenthal added. “They took us up on one.”
