Stevenson Facebook Bus Beating Consequences Uncertain

While accused attacker may be facing a felony charge, girl who filmed beating 'still under investigation.'

LINCOLNSHIRE, IL - The girl accused of filming and posting to Facebook a video of the beating of a fellow classmate at Stevenson High School has not been charged, according to police.

The Office of the Lake County State's Attorney did not respond for requests for confirmation of an arraignment on felony aggravated battery charges for the girl who was arrested the afternoon of Jan. 23. As for the student who filmed the attack, who appears from the video to have foreknowledge of the impending assault, "that portion is still under investigation," according to a spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police.

The Depke Juvenile Complex Center in Vernon Hill, which is handling the paperwork for the case, declined comment due to confidentiality considerations.

In the video posted to Facebook, the bus driver can be seen approaching the beating and telling the attacker to stop. When she does not, the driver does not physically intervene, instead appearing to seek assistance. The assault is eventually interrupted by a fellow student who appears to pull the attacker off of her victim.

"District policy allows for the use of reasonable force to maintain safety for students," a spokesperson for Stevenson told Lincolnshire Review.

First Student, Inc., the Cincinnati-based school bus company with which Stevenson contracts its school bus service, did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.

A separate First Student bus and two other vehicles collided Wednesday morning around Old Schaumburg and Meacham in Schaumburg, sending a driver and a child to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the Tribune.
