In a letter to City Manager (acting) Jason T. Slowinski, Police Chief James Prandini indicated that he will be retiring from the Police Department’s highest post effective January 1, 2012, having served the City for 31 years; eight as Chief of Police.
Prandini was appointed to the position of Police Officer in the City of Des Plaines on June 30, 1980. His career consisted of the following advancements: appointed to Detective Bureau, October 10, 1988; promoted to Sergeant, October 18, 1994; promoted to Lieutenant, January 4, 1999; appointed to Captain, August 7, 2000; title change to Deputy Police Chief, May 8, 2001; appointed Acting Chief of Police, August 4, 2003; and appointed Chief of Police, December 1, 2003.

According to Slowinski, current Deputy Police Chief Mike Kozak has been named Acting Police Chief until a permanent appointment can be made.

In his letter to City Manager Slowinski, Prandini wrote, “I have faithfully served the citizens of Des Plaines as a police officer for over thirty-one years and would like to thank everyone in the City who supported the police department during my tenure as Chief for the past eight years.”
“We thank Chief Prandini for his many years of dedicated, loyal service to the Des Plaines Police Department and the City,” Slowinski said. “He has served our citizens well and he will be missed by all. I wish him nothing but the best in his retirement years.”
