Des Plaines History Center book group to discuss trauma of war

Book Discussion: Achilles in Vietnam Wednesday, November 19, 6-7 p.m. Des Plaines History Center

To honor Veterans Day, the Des Plaines History Center has selected Achilles in Vietnam for its book discussion set for Wednesday, November 19, from 6-7 p.m. at the History Center, 781 Pearson Street, Des Plaines.

The book, written by Jonathan Shay, a renowned psychiatrist who has specialized in treating Vietnam veterans, examines the psychological toll of warfare and post-traumatic stress disorder on service members and draws thoughtful comparisons to the ancient Greek epic The Iliad.

“Even though only those who suffer from PTSD can truly understand it, it is important for everyone to be informed,” said Philip Mohr, History Center curator and facilitator of the book group. “Shay gives us numerous approaches to seeing how PTSD is caused and manifest in ancient and modern warfare. He also gives us a useful framework for analyzing historic literature using modern psychology.”
