Catch captivating cinema at Oakton's free international film fest

Travel the globe without leaving your seat through Oakton Community College's 29th Modern Language Film Fest March 28 -31.

Travel the globe without leaving your seat through Oakton Community College’s 29th Modern Language Film Fest, which features 12 fascinating, highly rated films. The movies, presented in their original languages with English subtitles, showcase the 13 languages available to study at the college. Screenings are March 28 - 31 and are free and open to the public at the campuses in Des Plaines (1600 E. Golf Road) and Skokie (7701 N. Lincoln Avenue).

This year’s selections is highlighted by the award winning film “Leviathan” (2014). This Russian motion picture won the Best Foreign Language Film award at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards and was judged as the best movie of the year at the 2014 London Film Festival and the 45th International Film Festival of India. In addition, “Leviathan” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film.

Directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev, “Leviathan” focuses on Kolya, a Russian man from a coastal town forced to fight a corrupt mayor when his house faces demolition. Kolya recruits a lawyer for help, but gets more than he bargained for in the process.

Other scheduled films include: “There Is a Man in Our House” (Arabic, 1961); “Coming Home” (Chinese, 2014); “The Intouchables” (French, 2011); “Barbara” (German, 2012); “Shiva” (Hebrew, 2011); “The Namesake” (Hindi and Urdu, 2006); “A Five Star Life” (Italian, 2013); “Like Father Like Son” (Japanese, 2013); “The Admiral” (Korean, 2014); “Jack Strong” (Polish, 2014); and “Chico and Rita” (Spanish, 2010).
Most of the showcased films aren’t rated by the Motion Picture Association of America and may be suitable for mature audiences only. The Film Fest is sponsored by Oakton’s Office of Access, Equity, and Diversity and the Department of Modern Languages.
