Kids to learn about Lincoln at Des Plaines History Center

Children are invited to celebrate the birthday of the sixteenth president of the United States at the After School Adventures program “Abraham Lincoln,” Thursday, February 4, from 3-5 p.m. at the Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson Street.

“Lincoln was one of my favorite presidents to research as a child,” said Carmina Gonzalez, programs assistant at the History Center. “I look forward to sharing my interest in this amazing man with the children.”

Gonzalez will kick off the program with a brief slide show and some background. Children will learn that Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky in 1809, was largely a self-educated man, became a prominent attorney and legislator from Illinois in 1861, and rose to the presidency to lead the country through the Civil War. Children will then create a log cabin made with Popsicle sticks in his honor.

The program is designed for children, ages 5-12, with an adult. The fee is $3 per child for non-members, $2 for members. The next After School Adventures program, “Dr. Seuss,” is set for Thursday, March 3, from 3-5 p.m. at the History Center.
