Oakton art exhibit about resilience of women opens Sept. 27

Nevertheless She Persisted: Women of Courage, Tenacity and Strength,” a juried art exhibition that examines how women today are displaying unheralded reserves of strength and resilience, opens Thursday, Sept. 27, at Oakton Community College’s Koehnline Museum of Art, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. Enjoy a free gala reception with the artists from 5 to 8 p.m. on opening night.

The annual collaboration between Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) and the Koehnline Museum of Art will display over 90 works by women artists from around the globe. This year’s theme thoughtfully examines how women are making waves, working to create a better world for themselves, their families and society.

“Selections honor women who persist,” Kathleen Carot, WGS coordinator, says. “The collection celebrates women in the United States or around the globe who have either a contemporary or historical context. The exhibit focuses on famous women, unsung heroines, friends and family.”

“Works reflect a variety of approaches to the theme from an astounding diversity of mediums, techniques and points of view,” Judy Langston, exhibit curator, adds. “Most striking is the spirit of hope and optimism that infused so many designs. We’re extremely grateful to the artists for their willingness to share their inspiring images and considerable talents with the Oakton community.”

“Women and Anger: Resistance, Power and Inspiration” runs through Friday, Oct. 19. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
