The Parks PlayBook: Bring your A game…

to Golf Center Des Plaines’ First Accuracy Challenge on Saturday, May 10.

Ball control and accuracy are key to a great game of golf. Often, golfers sacrifice far too many strokes on balls hit into the rough, bunkers, trees, water, or out of bounds. If you struggle to find the fairway, here are four simple tips:

1. Widen your stance. A lack of stability makes it difficult to turn and transfer weight properly. With the driver, the insides of both feet should be directly beneath the outsides of the shoulders. This stance keeps your lower body solidly in place and improves your club head’s path and contact with the ball.

2. Check your alignment. Sloppy aim assures one of two results: You will hit the ball off target or your body will try to compensate by swinging towards the target, causing a swing path that produces a hook or slice. Always pick an object directly between your ball and the target, then line up your clubface and body accordingly.

3. Use a shorter driver. Club makers have upped the standard driver length to 45 inches as a way to satisfy a distance-obsessed public. For many golfers, this is simply too long a shaft. If you’re using a 45” or longer driver and can’t hit it straight, consider cutting off an inch or two – or swapping it for a shorter one.

4. Practice, practice, practice!

Once you have warmed up your swing, it is time to take the Des Plaines Golf Center’s Accuracy Challenge. In Round 1, golfers receive 20 balls and take aim at targets on the range from a bay on the first floor. The goal is to hit the target on the fly. Points are awarded based on the distance of the target hit (25 points for a target 25 yards out, 50 points for a target 50 yards out, etc.) The top eight high scores move on to Round 2. In Round 2, golfers receive 15 balls and again aim to hit the range targets on the fly. The top four scores move on to Round 3, where they receive 10 balls, aim for the targets and receive points based on distance. The top scoring two golfers move on to the final round and again receive 10 balls. The highest scoring golfer wins the Grand Prize: A Golf Center Des Plaines full year Membership, worth $550.

Pre-registration is encouraged and is just $15 per person. Each bay has a state-of-the-art, automated tee up system, that keeps a golfer’s stance consistent and helps to banish those hooks, shanks, and slices. Tee heights can be set up to 2” making it perfect for those popular, large club heads. Golf Center Des Plaines is located at 353 N. River Road, one block north of River Road, and is open daily from 8:00am to 10:00pm in May, 7:00am-midnight starting June 1.
