American Creed Film Screening and Community Discussion

Downers Grove Public Library hosts facilitated discussion on what it means to be an American.

Join a community conversation about what it means to be an American on Saturday, March 2 at 1:00 p.m. at the Downers Grove Public Library. The discussion, led by Assistant Professor Caroline Kisiel will follow a screening of the PBS documentary American Creed.

In the film, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Pulitzer-Prize winning historian David Kennedy, and a group of diverse Americans explore whether a unifying set of beliefs – an American Creed – can be more powerful than the issues that divide us. The film explores the efforts of citizen-activists working to bring their communities together.

A facilitated discussion exploring these issues will follow the film led by Kisiel, a professor at DePaul University. She has conducted workshops both nationally and internationally and aims to cultivate an environment in which people feel free to express themselves.

“Being awarded this grant creates an opportunity for our community to have a focused, deliberate conversation,” said Karen Bonarek, Adult Program Coordinator at DGPL.

These screenings with scholar-facilitated discussions are being held in libraries, community centers, high schools and other civic spaces across the country. The film and discussion are funded by a grant from The American Library Association (ALA), in partnership with Citizen Film and the National Writing Project.
