'Americans And The Holocaust' Exhibition Comes To Downers Grove Library

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — The Downers Grove Public Library is among 50 libraries in the United States that will host the "Americans and the Holocaust" exhibition. The traveling exhibition is presented by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and the American Library Association.

The exhibition includes primary sources that date back to the 1930s and 1940s and illustrate how American media, military, government and residents responded to the Holocaust.

To coincide with the exhibition, the library plans to host special events, including a grand opening ceremony on Yom Hashoah, April 14 at 6:30 p.m.

During the exhibition opening ceremony, there will be a Reading of the Names led by community members.

Other events include an Educator Night on April 16 at 6:30 p.m. and "What Did American Know?" hosted by Exhibition Curator Daniel Greene on April 21 at 7 p.m.

Guided tours will be held April 25, April 28 and April 30.

“Bringing this exhibit to the library is one of the most important things I will do as a librarian,” Mary McDonald, the library's Adult Programming Coordinator, said in a statement.

McDonald added, "Watching the library come together to prepare for the exhibit has been truly special. It has been incredible connecting with leading experts in the field. I’m particularly excited about the opportunity for community members to hear from the curator of the exhibit this April, and leading historians in May."

The "Americans and the Holocaust" exhibition will be on display at Downers Grove Public Library through May 19.
