Lurie Children's Files Certificate Of Need For $480M Inpatient Hospital Project In Downers Grove

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Lurie Children's recently filed a Certificate of Need (CON) with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board for the $480 million project. To get this permit, hospitals must illustrate the community's need for their facility, along with the project's financial feasibility.

The inpatient pediatric hospital will occupy a 298,000 square foot building at Downers Grove's Esplanade at Locust Point, 3300 Lacey Rd. The facility will be equipped with 48 beds, a pediatric emergency department, an intensive care unit and surgical suites.

Outpatient services will include advanced imaging and specialty care, a news release said.

"LAs pediatric healthcare needs continue to grow across our region, this proposed facility would allow us to meet families closer to where they live while advancing our mission to deliver exceptional care, advance research and improve the health of children," Lurie Children's President and CEO Dr. Tom Shanley said in a statement.

Lurie Children's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Marcelo Malakooti added, "Children are not simply small adults and they deserve care designed specifically for their unique needs, This proposed hospital would help ensure that more families can access pediatric specialists, advanced treatments and emergency care from teams dedicated exclusively to caring for children.”

Lurie Children's first announced plans to build the inpatient pediatric hospital in Downers Grove this January.
