Baaah!: Goats, Sheep To Graze Park District Property In Downers Grove
The park district has enlisted the help of goats and sheep to help clear invasive plants from the Belmont Prairie Buffer.
DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Goats and sheep will help the Downers Grove Park District baaaaaah!-lance its ecosystem by allowing them to graze on the Belmont Prairie Buffer this summer. This marks the 10th year the animals will nosh on invasive plants to keep the village's natural habitats healthy and beautiful.
The goats and sheep, who will arrive via the Wisconsin company Vegetation Solutions, will gobble poison ivy spotted knapweed, honeysuckle, buckthorn and other plants over the six-acre parcel of land. An electric fence will keep them safely and humanely contained in a paddock.
Visitors are encouraged to admire the animals from afar without touching them and keep their dogs leashed and away from the fence. It's expected the industrious sheep and goats will be hard at work until around Aug. 20.
