DOWNERS GROVE, IL — The gifts have been opened, the lights have come down and it's time to get rid of those old holiday trees in Downers Grove. This January, residents can take advantage of free Christmas tree pickup from Republic Services or drop their trees off at McCullom or Whitlock Park to be recycled.

Republic Services will collect Christmas trees during its normal pickup times Jan. 3 through Jan. 13. On Jan. 16, residents can haul their trees to McCollum Park, 6801 Main St., or Whitlock Park, 4000 Fairview Ave., for recycling or mulching by the village's park district.

To ensure pickup and recycling, the Christmas trees should be free of garland, tinsel, lights, ornaments and other decor. Additionally, trees should not be put in plastic bags.
