Congressman Bill Foster to Attend March for Science in Washington D.C.

District 11 Congressman Bill Foster, a former physicist, is the only member of Congress with a science-based Ph.D.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — District 11 Congressman Bill Foster is making a trip to Washington D.C. this weekend, but it’s not for business. The congressman will participate in the April 22 March for Science Rally along with thousands of others to celebrate science advocate for policies based in science. Foster represents parts of Downers Grove, Naperville, Aurora and other DuPage County cities.

Science is near and dear to Bill Foster, who received a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University and is currently the only Congressman with a science-based doctorate degree. Before his political career, Foster worked as a particle energy designer and high-energy physicist at Fermilab. One of his developments there earned him an Energy Conservation Award from the United States Department of Energy.

Foster told STAT that he’s participating in the non-partisan March for Science, “not as a Democratic Member of Congress, but as a scientist,” emphasizing the need to evaluate some political decisions from a perspective he’s very familiar with — a scientific one.
