The Reading Games is a free and fun district-wide reading competition for District 58 students in grades 3-8. Teams of five to eight students collaborate to read 15 books from one of two book lists: Level 1 and Level 2. During the Reading Games, the teams compete to answer questions about the books. Teams may comprise students representing different schools or grade levels, as long as everyone attends District 58 schools.
Christy Gergits and Deb Krygeris coordinate The Reading Games. Gergits is a Whittier School reading specialist, and Krygeris is a Whittier sixth grade teacher.
The Reading Games Committee – comprising teachers and librarians – has read and vetted each book for the competition. Both the District 58 library resource centers and the Downers Grove Public Library carry copies of The Reading Games books. Level 1 books are geared toward third-through-fifth grade readers. Level 2 books are geared to the sixth-through-eighth grade level. However, any Reading Games team may select either list to read, regardless of their grade level.
Students who wish to join The Reading Games but cannot find enough peers to form a team may complete a Team Request Registration form, and The Reading Games Committee will attempt to place those students on a team. This form will be available on The Reading Games website Wednesday, Nov. 4.
