DGS Students Go Back to 'Kindergarten'

"All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" continues tonight at South.

Need a refresher course in learning how to share, helping one another or that it's okay to be different? 

Then head over to  Nov. 5 and 6 to catch the school's fall play "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten," an adaptation of Robert Fulghum's bestselling book.

The play, which is divided into 18 individual sketches, takes a look at what is profound in everyday life and offers a message for young and old alike.

"The ensemble is an incredibly gifted group of kids who are triple threats – acting, singing and dancing," said Jan Heiteen, the play's director and DGS English and communications teacher. "I wanted to select a play that incorporated a lot of music and movement to highlight their strengths."

Over the past 30 years, Heiteen has directed more then 100 plays, musicals, talent shows and children's productions for South.

The ensemble cast includes Billy Chengary, Cory Wilson, Erin C. Walsh, Alyssa Frewen, Michelle McCarthy, Colleen DeRosa, Alex Bahaveolos and Dan Leahy. Student Pianist Ian Williams accompanies the cast.

The cast has had four- to five-hour practices every day for the last month. About 50 students are also working on set design, costumes, lighting and sound.

"I think acting in the school plays gives us great life experience," said junior Alex Bahaveolos. "I love being in front of people on stage and performing."

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets will be available at the door.
