Downers Grove Eyes $8M Offer To Buy Part Of Civic Center

The funds would be used to help build a new police station and village hall in Downers Grove.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Downers Grove officials are getting closer to approving a plan to sell part of the village Civic Center in the hopes of eventually building a new police station and village hall. At an Oct. 2 village meeting, a number of commissioners were in favor of a proposal from a real estate company that wants to buy 5 acres for $8 million and build a medical office on the grounds of the Civic Center, Suburban Life reports.

At the meeting, Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully called the proposal a "pleasantly unexpected development."

Revenue from the medical office development would help fund the new village hall complex, which has been in the works for more than a year. Some village officials found the medical office proposal favorable to a 2017 proposal to build town homes near the Civic Center.

Others, like Commissioner Maggie Earl, said they preferred the idea of town homes and didn't see the medical office's $8 million offer as making a significant difference. Earl said, "I don't feel that throwing even more money at it makes it a whole lot better."

The next step is for the village to hash out the terms of the redevelopment plan, according to Suburban Life.
