“From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians” tells the epic story of the rise of Christianity.
Drawing upon historical evidence that has created a revolution in New Testament scholarship, this FRONTLINE series challenges familiar assumptions and conventional notions about Christian origins. Archaeological finds have yielded new understandings of Jesus’ class and social status; fresh interpretations have transformed earlier ideas about the identity of the early Christians and their communities. Twelve New Testament theologians, archaeologists, and historians present a range of viewpoints, a diversity of faiths, and a shared commitment to bring new ways of thinking about Christianity to a public audience.
Quakers (also known as Friends) are a spiritually diverse religious group with members in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America. Downers Grove Friends Meeting hosts fellowship activities, prayer, and study groups in addition to weekly meetings for worship at 5710 Lomond Ave. Downers Grove, IL.
Quakers generally recognize five central testimonies: simplicity, integrity, equality, community and peace. The testimonies are not rules, but ways of living in the world. For example, Quakers seek to avoid violence on both the personal and the societal level, and believe that the Spirit that takes away the need for war is available to everyone, everywhere, in all situations.
The Downers Grove Friends Meeting began in 1951 and has offered community to Quakers and others in the Chicago western suburbs ever since.
